<title>Permanence in diversity : Netherlands Ecological Research on Edgeøya, Spitsbergen</title>
<description>
With the publication of this special issue of Circumpolar Journal, the Arctic Centre of the University of Groningen would like to honour Piet Oosterveld as the driving force behind biological research on Edgeøya, Spitsbergen. He invested large amounts of time and energy in this research and he was an inspiration for many students.
The book starts with an article about Piet Oosterveld’s Arctic activities written by Louwrens Hacquebord. After some fieldwork in Iceland Piet Oosterveld’s Arctic career really started with a wintering spent on Edgeøya in 1968-1969.
In this book Piet Oosterveld’s companion Ko de Korte reports on this wintering. Some years later Piet Oosterveld was the instigator of the Reindeer Environment Expedition to Edgeøya in 1977. The most important product of this expedition, the ecological landscape map, was never published. In our opinion this ecological landscape map merits publication
and fortunately Ies Zonneveld was willing to revise the article accompanying the map which is to be found at the back of the book. In this article the results of the ecological survey are presented..
The articles of Arend J. van Dijk and Hester D. Heinemeijer also deal with the ornithological and botanical results of the Reindeer Environment Expedition Svalbard.
The articles of Pim van der Knaap &amp; Jacqueline van Leeuwen and Leo M. Jalink &amp; Marijke Nauta are dealing with other biological research on Edgeøya initiated by Piet Oosterveld. They are presented here as a tribute to Piet Oosterveld’s always stimulating energy and effort to make research in
Spitsbergen possible.

<title>Nuclear weapons and European interests : Discussions in the Assembly of the Western European Union, 1955–1975</title>
<description>
In the 1950s and 1960s the Defence Committee of the Western European Union (WEU) Assembly submitted a series of conspicuous reports on nuclear control issues, culminating in a plea for an Atlantic nuclear force. The article analyses the reports and discussions in the Assembly in the field of defence as well as its attempts to have their recommendations adopted by national parliaments. Internal political and national differences notwithstanding, the representatives in the WEU Assembly developed a clear understanding of European interests.

<description>

<title>Evaluation of string distance algorithms for dialectology</title>
<description>
We examine various string distance measures for suitability in modeling dialect distance, especially its perception. We find measures superior which do not normalize for word length, but which are are sensitive to order. We likewise find evidence for the superiority of measures which incorporate a sensitivity to phonological context, realized in the form of n-grams---although we cannot identify which form of context (bigram, trigram, etc.) is best. However, we find no clear benefit in using gradual as opposed to binary segmental difference when calculating sequence distances.

<description>

<title>A report on the field activities of the Dakhleh Oasis Project during the 2003–2004 field season</title>
<description>
The 2003–2004 field season of the Dakhleh Oasis Project took place between 10th
November, 2003 and 25th March, 2004. A total of 42 expedition members joined the field work at various times during the season. The expedition was based, for the second season, at our new headquarters at ‘Ain el-Gindi, Sheikh Wali. It was our good fortune to have the Governor of the New Valley, General Medhat Abdel-Rahaman, present at the opening ceremony on 22nd January. Field work included surveying by geoarchaeologists, paleontologists and Egyptologists; excavations at Mut el-Kharab, Ismant el-Kharab, Amheida and el-Qasr. Site conservation
work was accomplished at a number of sites – the Mamissi plaster at the Temple of Tutu at Ismant el-Kharab, the Bayt el-Qadi (‘House of the Judge’) at el-Qasr, the Roman sandstone temple at ‘Ain Birbiyeh, and Roman period plaster decoration at Amheida. Special studies of Old Kingdom flint working, archaeobotany, papyrology, and physical anthropology also went forward.

<title>The field activities of the Dakhleh Oasis Project during the 2002 – 2003 field season</title>
<description>
The Dakhleh Oasis Project (DOP) is a long-term regional study of the interaction between environmental changes and human activity in the closed area of the Dakhleh Oasis, Western Desert of Egypt, but including the larger area of the Palaeoasis. The study includes all the time since the first incursion of man in the Middle Pleistocene, perhaps 400,000 years ago, down to the 21st century oasis farmers, and all the human activity and all the changing environmental conditions for which there is evidence within the time period.
